In 1847 John Smith had to leave slaves behind to move to Cincinnati OH. He told them to "find homes". Two were sold to masters of their own choosing. A female and two sons worked off her $2,000 debt of freedom on the steamboat J.S. Chenoweth. John Smith worked in 1852 on his brother James's steamboat between Louisville and New Orleans. By 1854 he was master of the "John Johnson" on the lower Missouri River.¹
